You remember your grandmother telling you all the time growing up that prevention is better than cure, don’t you? At the time, it may not have made much sense to you but as time went by, you began to see the wisdom in her words. The same wisdom can be applied to your health, especially as you enter your thirties. At this age, gravity has yet to play its cruel tricks, but you may find it increasingly harder to bounce back from a middle of the week after work lime, or find a flight of stairs a bit tougher to navigate than you used to. No need to worry, though, you’re entering one of the best phases of your life! But you would do well to heed your grandmother once more and take her words to heart. As we age, prevention is definitely better than any cure.
Optimise Heart Health
Introducing more whole foods and lean protein will go a long way towards protecting your heart. Dark, leafy greens like spinach and kale are great sources of iron which promotes cardiovascular health, as well as oily fish like salmon. Rather than making any drastic changes overnight, your best bet for success is to slowly add healthier elements to meals you ordinarily prepare or order out.
Sleep On It
By now, school days and its requisite all-nighters cramming for exams are long behind you. So why aren’t you on a proper sleeping schedule yet? Getting the recommended 7 – 8 hours of proper rest each night allows your body to repair and recover from the day’s stresses and prepares you for the new day ahead.
Walk It Off
You don’t have to be the hero in the gym deadlifting 250 pounds, or spend two hours on the treadmill to start seeing the benefits of regular exercise. Studies show that any physical activity that keeps your heart rate elevated for at least 30 minutes for 5 days a week is enough to promote heart health. So get out there!
